HURRICANE Irma has claimed its first victim in the USA after a man died in a pickup truck crash in the Florida Keys.
The man was driving through Monroe County when he lost control of his vehicle in the raging winds.
In Hardee County, sheriff’s deputy Julie Bridges was one of two people killed in an accident as she drove home from work in low visibility on Sunday morning.
Sergeant Joseph Ossman of the Florida Department of Corrections also died in the crash.
Irma had already killed 25 people in the Caribbean before the latest fatalities.
Having arrived in the Florida Keys as a Category 4 hurricane, the storm fell to Category 1 as it approached Tampa with 85mph winds early on Monday.
Millions of people huddled in shelters or in battened-down homes in Florida as Irma, one of the most powerful storms ever recorded in the Atlantic, arrived.

Forecasters warned Irma remained dangerous as it toppled power lines, tore up roofs and threatened coastal areas with storm surges as high as 15ft.
More than 4.4 million homes and businesses also lost power as the storm continued to ravage the state.
